Learn and practice basic hand building techniques
Service Description
During three 2-hour sessions you will learn and practise basic hand-building techniques including pinch shaping, coiling and slab building, sometimes combining different approaches to create a piece. We will also cover strategies for preparing clay to get it into the correct state for use in different situations, joining pieces, adding texture and refining or finishing. This course is led by Dave Short. Dave was strictly a thrower until he was shocked into hand-building action by being selected to appear in The Great Pottery Throwdown on Channel 4. Having hand-built gluggle jugs, Staffordshire flatbacks, a raku fired turkey and even a toilet in front of the cameras he has gained a love of hand-building in all its forms. The price includes glazing and firing of three pieces. There will be an additional cost for firing further pots - £12 per kilo ( This is for one bisque firing and one glaze firing) Dates: Friday 16th, 23rd, 30th Jan 2026 Time: 10.30am-12.30pm Price: £135 Duration: Total 6 hours Group Size: 5 People Location: The Spotty Dog Pottery, 5 Barton Street, Tewkesbury, Glos, GL20 5PP Skill level: Suitable for beginners aged 12 years and over All materials and tools supplied. PLEASE BRING AN APRON AND HAND TOWEL IN A CARRIER BAG WITH YOU EACH WEEK or purchase our starter kit. We would suggest wearing clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting clay on (The clay doesn’t stain and is fully washable). Booking is essential, as numbers are limited to 5 students. Terms & Conditions When booking a workshop run by Rachel Elizabeth , the following terms & conditions form the agreement between us (The Spotty Dog Place) and you (Participant) ● Workshops will require at least 3 participants to run, if the workshop has to be cancelled for this reason a full refund will be given. ● A workshop booking is not deemed confirmed until full payment is received. ● Payment is required in full at the point of booking and a space on the workshop will be confirmed by the email address you provided at the point of booking. ● Once a booking is confirmed by email it can only be cancelled if at least 15 days' notice is given by the participant whereupon, Rachel Elizabeth may offer to: Resell the place by approaching those on a reserve list if there is one. In that event, a full refund will be given. Transfer your booking to another workshop run by Rachel Elizabeth Should the alternative workshop be at a differing price, the difference will be rechargeable or refunded. Issue a credit note for another workshop run by Rachel Elizabeth ● If Rachel Elizabeth should cancel a workshop for any reason, she will contact you as soon as possible and an alternative date for the same workshop will be offered. If this cannot be fulfilled a full refund will be given.
